The big advantage the Mark III had in terms of image quality for me was (finally!) great ISO 1600-3200 straight out of the camera. Within a few months I sold on the 1D3 and replaced it with a used 1D4, what a difference, this camera is superb, and it's now my body of choice for all photography except landscapes.
A few folk seem to have developed problems with the latest 1d Mark IV firmware which I have now running and am using without any issues. A few sample and experimental images below - all in pretty poor light shot between ISO 800 and 2000 and note that even on 'still' subjects, I have used A1 servo to monitor focus stability and accuracy.
The Canon 1D Mark IV's 16-megapixel sensor captures a lot of image detail when coupled with a good lens, but images are slightly oversharpened at default settings. In the first section, I slightly enlarged the smaller 18MP 1D X image to the same size as the 5D Mark III image. Each camera was set to 6 sharpening, and + 3 for saturation, as I usually shoot. Canon is calling their latest EOS-1D digital SLR the “ultimate multimedia imaging solution.” The new Canon EOS-1D Mark IV has a 16.1-megapixel APS-H (1.3x crop factor) CMOS sensor and captures full-resolution RAW images at 10 frames per second and 1080p video at 30, 24 or 25 frames per second.
